Initial Ideas

Our group plans to make a video to the song Broken Silence which is by a group called the So Solid crew, This song is of a london genre called "Grime" but is similar to rap as seen in america. This song is about the struggles of teenage knife crime, Gun crime and death of people they known, we had an idea to have children miming the words of the lyrics of the song in the video, to show that they also witness whats going wrong with these things in society but we realised that this may be hard to replicate as accessing children of a young age that are able to mime all the words affectively would not be easy. So we decided to have a narrative and display how and why these things may happen through a short story, we aim to let the audience gain a relationship with the protangonist by showing his family life, school life and his life outside of crime to make a point that not all situations are caused by heartless youths, but mislead and confused people who dont know what else to do to earn things they aspire to gain. This video will have intertextuality to the film "Bullet boy" as the protagonists younger brother who isnt a part of any crime at all will also find his brothers gun or weapon and it will cause trouble in the younger brothers life. I think this production would be unique as most things about gun crime are from the victims point of iew and you dont always get to see both sides of the story, This also goes against typical insinuations of rap as it has more meaning and is not just about money, cars and girls. Similar to the music video "Stan" by "Eminem" and "Brendas Got A Baby" by "2Pac" These videos are inspirational as they both involve the audience emotionally into the narrative and get the meaning of the song in the strongest way possible.
